The History
The Partridge Inn is set within the picturesque Goodwood Estate in the South Downs village of Singleton near Chichester, West Sussex.
The building dates back to the 16th century when it would have been owned by the rich and powerful Fitzalan Earls of Arundel. They kept a huge hunting park which took in the whole of Singleton, Charlton and East Dean. In 1732 the Duke of Richmond – another great hunting man – became the owner of the Fox and Hounds Inn. The property included a brew house, barn, stable and a large garden.
The Inn appears to have been closed in the late seventeen hundreds but reopened as a pub and beer house in the 1840s. Popular with local farm labourers, in 1949 the Rector of Singleton mentioned in a letter to the Duke of Richmond’s steward that this public house was “a most horrid nuisance and den of iniquity”. At that time the village school was directly opposite and the Rector maintained that the schoolmaster “has been subjected to serious and repeated annoyances”.
Horses and hunting have always been important in the Lavant Valley and, until the advert of sophisticated horse transport; Goodwood Race Week was Singleton’s high spot of the year. Horses bedded down in every stable in the village, jockeys, stable lads and farriers boarded in every cottage. The pub regularly had swings and a try-your-strength machine in the front yard.
Today the Partridge Inn is transformed into a warm local pub with great character at its heart. Expect a friendly welcome, a relaxed atmosphere and great food served under the eye of its new owner Giles Thompson, past executive head chef of the Ritz London.
